William Glenn “Billy” Vaughn, 48-year-old son of former Ledger-Enquirer publisher Glenn Vaughn, died in his sleep early today in his Watkinsville, Ga., home.
Vaughn, for years a community newspaper reporter and editor in the South, most recently had worked for the Lake Oconee News in Eatonton, Ga., and the Oconee Enterprise in Watkinsville.
He was “the best editor we ever had,” said Enterprise publisher Vinnie Williams.
Vaughn was born in Columbus in 1960 and attended Columbus High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Ga., and later a master’s from Columbus State.
He had worked at the Meridian Star, Savannah Morning News and the Clayton News-Daily in Jonesboro. There, he was cited for contempt of court for refusing to reveal a source in a drug trafficking series he was writing. His case helped lead to Georgia passing a shield law protecting reporters.
Survivors include his parents, Glenn and Nancy Vaughn; his wife Lenora Miller Vaughn; a stepson, Tyler; a brother, Bobby Vaughn of Marietta, Ga.,; sisters Valorie Vaughn Cardell of Greenville, S.C., and Penny Vaughn Byrd of Tuxedo, N.C.
