A 21-year-old East Point, Ga., man died Saturday while trying to rescue a 9-year-old swimming in Robin Lake at Callaway Gardens, officials said.

The deceased and a 14-year-old boy went into the lake around 12:30 p.m., said Harris County Coroner James Carver.

“It appears he was trying to help a 9-year-old that was struggling in the water,” Carver added.

The 14-year-old grabbed the child and both made it back to shore.

“They looked back for the other guy, and he had gone under,” Carver said.

The man’s body was recovered at 2:29 p.m., and he was pronounced dead at 2:40 p.m., the coroner said.
