The Muscogee County School Board will hold a work session at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7 in the board room of the old Bradley Library on Bradley Drive.
During the work session, the board will discuss a new proposed cell phone policy for the school system. The board first discussed the district's cell phone policy during a Saturday retreat last month. The system's current policy prohibits the use of cell phones, but does not lay out the consequences if a student is caught with a cell phone.
Under the proposed policy, a student caught with a cell phone in school would have their phone held by the principal for three school days. The student's parent would be able to pick up the phone at the close of the third school day.
After a student's second offense, the phone would be held five school days. After a third offense, the student would be assigned in-school suspension for two days and a parent would be allowed to pick up the phone after 10 school days. A mandatory parent conference would also be held.
After a student's fourth offense, the student would be suspended out of school for two days for each offense and the parent would be able to pick up the phone at the end of the school day.
If the student's parent is adamant that the phone cannot be held, then the student can accept two days of out-of-school suspension instead.
If approved by the school board, the new cell phone procedures would go into effect on August 20. The school year begins on August 6.
