Students in Chattahoochee County began a new school year today.
Today was the first day of classes for teachers and students at the county's three schools. The district has the earliest start date in the Chattahoochee Valley.
"It's a Monday on a Wednesday," said Chattahoochee County High School principal Jim Sims, while supervising students picking up their class schedules in the cafeteria. "It's organized chaos. We'll get classes started and things will start to settle down."
Sims said parent and student reaction to the early start date is mixed.
"Some like it, some don't like it," he said. Since classes start so early, schools in the district get more breaks during the year and an entire week for Thanksgiving.
"I'm fine with it. We benefit from it later in the year," said freshman Chelsea Coleman.
Junior Reba Ash transferred to Chattahoochee County High School this year from Carver High School. Muscogee County Schools don't start classes until August 6, so many of her friends are still on vacation.
"They're mad at me," she said.
