The Internal Revenue Service said today it is relocating its Taxpayer Assistance Center in Columbus from 3604 Macon Road — inside a retail shopping center — to a business park farther north and just off Gateway Road.
To make the move to 6068 Business Park Drive, Suite 124, the Macon Road office’s last day will be Thursday, with the center closed Friday. The new location, about 7 miles away from the existing one, will open 12:30 p.m. Monday.
“What we’re trying to do is downsize the space to save the government money and make it more convenient to taxpayers,” said Atlanta IRS spokesman Mark Green, noting the existing office adjacent to a Dairy Queen outlet has been operating since 1995. It has 32 employees.
Normal hours for the local Taxpayer Assistance Center are 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The current location is more centrally located in Columbus. The new one on Gateway Road — which parallels Manchester Expressway — will be about midway between the Walmart Supercenter and the expressway’s Miller Road exit.
A check of the route map of the city’s public transportation service, METRA, shows a bus makes it to the Miller Road exit, but not as far as the business park. METRA Director Saundra Hunter said she will check into any changes that need to be made to the route.
No appointments are necessary at the IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center.
