Grayhawk Homes, a homebuilding company headquartered in Columbus, has been named a 2013 Energy Star Partner of the Year.
Grayhawk President Dave Erickson was in Washington, D.C. Tuesday night to accept the award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.
The local company is among more than 100 U.S. firms receiving the Energy Star recognition. They range from public utility companies and appliance manufacturers to big-box warehouse retailers such as Home Depot and Lowe’s.
Erickson said the move to start building Energy Star-certified homes in 2010 was a “conscious decision” to get confirmation that his company was already doing just that.
“I would make an argument in a lot of ways that we’ve always been leading the pack for the last 10 years or so,” he said. “But there wasn’t a good way to document it. By making the leap to Energy Star, it cost us a little bit more per house, but it became an irrefutable declaration that we were clearly doing something that was head and shoulders above the competition.”
Grayhawk Homes is a leading builder in the Columbus and Phenix City market. It also builds in a handful of Iowa communities, including Des Moines. Erickson said he expects to construct about 200 homes locally this year.
