Columbus-area travelers looking to shave a few minutes off their security checks at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport now may be able to do so.
The airport said Tuesday that a TSA Precheck application center will officially open Wednesday near the main security checkpoint (Gate A19).
“This expedited screening program allows travelers to leave on their shoes, light outerwear and belt, keep their laptop in its case and keep 3-1-1 compliant liquids/gels bag in a carry-on bag,” the airport said.
Transportation Security Administration Director John Pistole and Delta Air Lines executives are expected to be on hand for the opening, with the Atlanta airport among 300 planned application centers in the U.S.
Never miss a local story.
The only other Georgia airport on TSA’s list of centers is Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. In Alabama, Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport and Huntsville International Airport will have a center.
Applicants can do a pre-enrollment online, then complete the process by making an appointment and visiting the center in person to verify they are who they are with documents and fingerprinting. Requirements include being a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or lawful permanent resident.
There is an application fee of $85, which is non-refundable even if an applicant is deemed not eligible for TSA Precheck.
