For the 16th year in a row, Aflac has made Fortune's list of "100 Best Companies to Work For," coming in at No. 58 this year.
"The companies on this list understand the role that people and culture play in their success," said China Gorman, chief executive officer of Great Place to Work, said in a statement issued Thursday by Columbus-based Aflac. "A great workplace culture and high-trust work environment win these companies not just a spot on this list, but buoys theiroverall success in an increasingly competitive marketplace."
Aflac, which sells supplemental health and life insurance in the U.S. and Japan, was No. 84 on the list in 2013. It employs nearly 4,000 in Columbus and overall more than 4,700 in the U.S. It has about 5,000 staffers in Japan.
The company, like the other honorees, had to submit an application to be considered for the list. The process included an employee survey and completion of a questionnaire about the company's programs and practices that impact its workers. Five areas were evaluated -- credibility, respect, fairness, pride and camaraderie.
Dan Amos, Aflac chairman and CEO, noted the long string of appearances on the Fortune list.
"Aflac was founded on the principle that if you treat the employees right, they will take care of the business and we believe these ideals lift our company to the highest levels of customer service and value," he said in a statement.
Topping Fortune's 2014 list is technology giant Google. The remainder of the top 10 are SAA, The Boston Consulting Group, Edward Jones, Quicken Loans, Genentech, salesforce.com, Intuit, Robert W. Baird & Co. and DPR Construction.
Other notables include USAA (No. 17), St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital (30), Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (43), CarMax (54), Marriott International (57), Darden Restaurants (74) and Publix Super Markets (75).
