It’s a family-oriented event aimed at giving kids and adults alike close-up looks at a fire truck, ambulance and tractor-trailer rigs, with proceeds ultimately benefiting Hope Harbour, a local domestic violence center for women and children.
“Truck Day,” as the fundraiser is called, will take place 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the TSYS Learning Center, an employer-sponsored child-care facility operated by Watertown, Mass.-based Bright Horizons Family Solutions.
There is a $5 admission fee to check out a variety of vehicles, with an $8 “all-inclusive pass” including craft activities, games, vendors and a raffle opportunity. Children age 10 and under get in free. There will be light refreshments for purchase.
The money raised Saturday goes to Bright Horizons Foundation for Children, with the nonprofit organization then funding a transformation of a “Bright Space” room at Hope Harbour into a peaceful, educational and fun-filled oasis for those staying at the shelter.
“We’re going to use the funds to paint the walls, get some new shelving in there, some new flooring, redecorate and make it nice and warm for them,” said Brittany Guillory, the Georgia pre-kindergarten teacher at the TSYS center and head of an employee “Better Together” committee that has organized Truck Day.
The Bright Horizons website says the Bright Spaces often include language and music centers, educational games, soft toys and dolls, arts and crafts materials, play areas with props and costumers, and computer equipment.
Guillory said the work at Hope Harbour will be scheduled after the fundraiser, with the scope of improvements being made at the local Bright Space depending on how well Saturday’s fundraiser goes.
Aside from the entrance fees, donations can be made by check to Bright Horizons Foundation for Children, the organizers said.
TSYS spokesman Cyle Mims said some of its employee parent-volunteers are expected to help with the event. The learning center is off One TSYS Way, near the intersection of Second Avenue, in downtown Columbus.
Bright Horizons Family Solutions was founded in 1986 and now serves more than 850 companies throughout the U.S. and in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, Canada and India. Its foundation was launched in 1999.
