All 50 offices of the Georgia Department of Veterans Services, including the field service office in Columbus, will be closed Monday through Friday because of staff training.
Field service officers will take part in training led by veterans service personnel with support from specialists from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
"This training is necessary to ensure our employees maintain certification and stay up-to-date on the latest changes to regulations governing veterans benefits," said George Canavaggio, assistant commissioner for Field Operations & Claims.
The Columbus office at 1520 Third Ave., Suite 5, serves three counties, including Chattahoochee, Stewart and Muscogee. Serving Georgia veterans and their families, the veterans service office offers assistance with veterans benefits, claims and appeals support, nursing home care, cemetery committal service, veterans education, on-the-job training and apprenticeship training program management.
After the training, all veterans field service offices in the state reopen for business on July 20.
If there is an emergency, veterans may call Veterans Affairs directly at 800-827-1000. A representative at the Columbus office may be reached at 706-649-1266 or 706-649-1264.
