A Guntersville, Ala-based off-price clothing retailer called Factory Connection has expanded to Phenix City’s Village Green Shopping Center, with the store at 1126 U.S. Highway 280 opening today. That’s next to the Piggly Wiggly supermarket.
Factory Connection, founded in 1976, is in a growth mode, with Morgan Willis, the company’s real estate asset administrator, saying the apparel, shoes and accessories chain plans to open 25 stores through 2016, giving it 325 in 15 states altogether. With the Phenix City store, which has six employees, it will have 39 stores in Alabama alone, including one in Eufaula.
There also are locations in nearby LaGrange and Manchester, Ga., with the company’s website saying other new stores are now opening in Milledgeville and Rome, Ga., Wilmington, Ohio, Anadarko, Okla., and Mayfield, Ky.
Factory Connection offers “name brand and specialty store fashions at prices that are 25 percent to 70 percent below regular retail,” its website says. It’s strategy includes shipping new merchandise twice a week, at times in limited quantities, to keep customers coming in its doors frequently to see what has arrived.
Its niche also includes typically opening outlets in smaller communities. It has stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.
The Phenix City store’s opening comes with Alabama’s sales tax holiday on clothing, computers, school supplies and books scheduled for Aug. 7-9. All Alabama retailers must waive the state sales tax during the holiday, while most cities and some counties — including Phenix City and Russell County — are taking part in the event as well.
Georgia’s sales tax holiday on similar items started today and concludes Saturday. Columbus is participating in the event.
