Those serving their nation at Fort Benning will soon have a Zaxby’s chicken restaurant serving them, and it will be the first on a military base.
Athens, Ga.-based Zaxby’s said Friday that a 5,000-square-foot eatery that seats 103 customers is tentatively scheduled to open March 21 at 7290 Ingersoll St., although there is a possibility its debut could be pushed back a week or two. Construction and equipping of the restaurant is now wrapping up.
Al Gelineau, chief of Fort Benning’s Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation, said this is the first Zaxby’s to open on a military installation. It comes after a survey of the post’s soldiers and family members found the chicken fingers and wings chain was what they wanted most, making it the “clear winner.”
The new Zaxby’s is located adjacent to the Carmike Cinemas Wynnsong movie theater on Fort Benning’s main post, and across from the new 860-room Abrams Hall hotel. It will include a drive-thru window.
Gelineau, in a statement, noted there are only a handful of private restaurants on military installations. Fort Benning, however, has a decent helping of eateries that troops, their families and civilian workers can frequent rather than having to venture off post.
In the general vicinity of Zaxby’s, there is a Burger King, a Huddle House, Subway, Dunkin’ Donuts, Java Crew, Pizza Hut and Little Caesars Pizza . Other eateries and food outlets on post, according to a Google maps check, include Arby’s, Charley’s Grilled Subs, Baskin-Robbins and El Zapata Restaurante Mexico.
This will be the seventh Zaxby’s location in the Columbus-Phenix City market and the 230th in Georgia. Founded in 1990, the chain has more than 700 outlets in 16 states, with a heavy presence across the Southeast, but also stretching as far north as Indiana and westward into Texas and Utah. The chain operates under a franchise owner system.
The company is known for its chicken fingers, wings, sandwiches and salads. The Fort Benning location will include a Coca-Cola Freestyle drink machine that allows customers to mix their own beverages from 100-plus flavors and brands.
