About 800 Christmas trees will given free of charge to active-duty soldiers on Fort Benning on Thursday.
The trees will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis courtesy of the Trees for Troops program, which is sponsored by the Christmas Spirit Foundation and the FedEx Corporation.
The giving of the trees will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wetherby Field. A valid military identification card is required to receive a tree.
According to a news release, since 2005, when the program was launched, FedEx has shipped more than 176,000 real Christmas trees to service members and their families covering every branch of the military at close to 65 bases in 17 countries.
Never miss a local story.
More than 18,000 trees will be donated this year.
