Slippery, Slimy Saturday
The Florence Marina State Park will host a day of all things slippery and slimy. Learn about earthworms, snails and frogs. You can make your own slime and cool off slipping down a slip and slide. The event is 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday with a $3 admission fee per person and $5 for parking. The Marina is located at 218 Florence Rd., Omaha, Ga. For more information, call 229-838-4706.
CodeRED is a system the city uses to send mass notifications by phone, email and text to keep Columbus citizens informed. In the event of an evacuation, utility outage, water main break, fire or flood, chemical spill or other emergency situation, the City may activate CodeRED to send emergency notifications to registered subscribers. The City may also use CodeRED to communicate non-life safety matters, such as planned road closures, water main repairs, water service interruptions, etc. There is no charge to register and personal information is kept confidential. You can sign up for CodeRED at http://www.columbusga.org. Things to know: A CodeRED notification will appear on your caller ID as 954-828-8000. The system is compatible with TDD/TTY devices for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. The Way Down Film Society
Hosted by The Way Down Film Society, the 1987 Oscar-nominated comedy “Broadcast News” will be shown in Blanchard Hall at the CSU Cunningham Center Tuesday. A meet and greet begins at 6 p.m. and the show will begin at 6:30 p.m. A discussion will be held after the movie. Back to School Jam
Amerigroup Community Care and Community Partners will host a Back to School Jam 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. There will be free health screenings, food, entertainment, bounce house, games, prizes and more. Free school supplies will also be given out while supplies last. (Child must be present.) Outdoor Movie Night
The City of Smiths Station will host an outdoor movie night at The Smiths Station Sports Complex 6:30 p.m. Saturday. There will be food and music provided by a DJ. AARP Smart Driver Course
The AARP Smart Driver Course, offered by AARP Driver Safety, is being offered at St. Francis Tuesday. This is the nation’s first and largest refresher course designed specifically for drivers age 50 and older. The course will take place 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in the hospital’s Jack Tidwell Lecture Hall located in the Butler Pavilion at 2300 Manchester Expressway. Sponsored by St. Francis’ PrimeTime program, the course is open to any interested person. The program is focused on helping people 50 and older live healthier longer lives by providing educational programs and health screenings. Membership in PrimeTime or AARP is not required to take the course, though AARP members do receive a discount. The course costs $20 for nonmembers and $15 for AARP members. (Members should bring their membership card and driver’s license for the discount.) After completing the course, participants receive a certificate of completion that can be presented to their insurance agent for a possible reduction in auto insurance premiums.
