More than 60 wrecks reported in Columbus on snow day, police say
Columbus has seen more than 60 wrecks since snowfall hit the city early Wednesday morning, authorities said around noon.
Columbus Police Maj. Charles Kennedy said 62 crashes have been reported since about 5:30 a.m. with six only of those leading to minor injuries. He said the collisions have occurred all throughout the city and none have caused serious injury.
Authorities urge drivers to stay off of the roads unless it's absolutely necessary.
"Road crews are out trying to do everything they can to put sand on the roads to make the roads passable, but the roads are still dangerous, slick," Kennedy said. "We are just encouraging people to stay off the road unless they just absolutely have to be on the road."
Those who must be on the roadway are advised to drive slowly and watch out of other drivers.
"Try to stay in the roadway, but in the driest or least traveled areas," Kennedy said. "Slow down and give yourself plenty of distance to stop."
