Looking for a horse? The state is selling 34 horses at auction Saturday.
The remainder of a herd of horses impounded in Pike County in February will be for sale in a Georgia Department of Agriculture auction at noon Saturday at the Mansfield Equine Impound Facility, Jasper County. They can be viewed beginning at 10 a.m.
An updated color catalog is available for the auction on the department's Web site at www.agr.georgia.gov. The 32 lots (34 animals) to be sold are listed in sale order.
"These are some excellent animals that just need good homes," said Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin. "Because of the extended time frame of the legal proceedings of the Pike County case, our staff has had extra time to work with these animals."
Never miss a local story.
All but seven of the horses to be auctioned were among nearly 100 horses seized from a Pike County farm. The catalog lists descriptions of ground manners and riding ability. New terms and conditions of sale are on the last page of the catalog. Auction participants are urged to print the catalog and bring it with them.
The Morgan County chapter, Future Farmers of America, will run concession sales, with proceeds being donated to the state Equine Impoundment Program. A silent auction of donated equine supplies also will be held.
The impound facility is at 2834 Marbin Farm Road, Mansfield. For directions, contact the GDA Equine Health Office Monday - Friday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at 404-656-3713.
