A Columbus man died Friday night after running his truck into the back of another vehicle on Highway 165, Phenix City police said.
Larry Smith, 35, of Mississippi was traveling north on Highway 165, waiting to turn into the BP outpost station, when a 1995 Nissan pick-up truck, driven by Bobby Elton Watson of Columbus, hit the back of the trailer Smith was pulling behind his 2004 Chevy 250 pickup truck, Phenix City police Lt. Patrick Daugherty said.
Joann Watson, the victim's wife, said Saturday that her husband was returning home from work at the MeadWestvaco plant in Cottonton.
Bobby Watson, 61, was pronounced dead on the scene at 9 p.m., from blunt force trauma to the head, Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry said. His body was sent to the Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery.

Smith escaped without any injuries, Daugherty said. Joann Watson said the funeral for Bobby Watson is still pending.
