The Troup County Sheriff's Department this week arrested two men in connection with the theft of materials from the construction site of the new Callaway Elementary School, 2190 Hammett Road.
Jesse Joe Hudgins, 22, of 19 Carey St., and Eric Gene Bowen Jr., 18, of 281 Old Hammett Road, were charged with one count each of felony theft by taking.
Lt. Rick Massie said incidents of theft began at the site in early September and that it has been entered several times since, with numerous items being taken from various contractors.
On Sept. 7, he said a semi-truck trailer was entered and a large amount of copper pipe was stolen. On Oct. 6, several locked trailers had their locks cut off and a sizeable amount of copper tubing was taken from the ceiling of the unfinished school, he said. A Dewalt grinder, construction level, fax machine and two portable phones were also reported stolen during that incident.
On Oct. 28, several pieces of electronic surveillance equipment belonging to the Troup County Sheriff's Office also was taken.
Total losses from the neighborhood are estimated at $35,000.
