A passing motorist discovered a dismembered, burned body dumped in garbage bags on the road right of way along Sitcher Road in Troup County north of LaGrange and reported it to the Troup County Sheriff's Department at 7:41 a.m. Thursday.
Lt. Rick Massie said it appears someone attempted to burn the body at the site off U.S. Highway 29 near Callaway High School, in the rural residential area. He said it apparently was dumped and burned Wednesday night or early Thursday.
The body was cut up and placed in five garbage bags, but the hands and feet were missing, Massie said. He said he didn't know whether the head was in one of the bags. The bags were partially open from tears and from being set afire. They were found about 95 feet from the intersection of Whitfield and Sitcher roads, less than a mile from Callaway High.
Investigators were still on the site gathering evidence at 10:20 a.m. The site is along a paved, dead-end road. Massie said the body is being sent to the State Crime Laboratory in Atlanta and that authorities are not disclosing details such as the sex and age of the victim, whether the body was clothed or other information.
"It's going to be sad for somebody's family," said Massie. "Somebody is experiencing a loss."
He said he is not aware of any missing person from that area being reported to the sheriff's department recently. The deceased could have come from anywhere, he said.
Anyone with information about the crime or about a missing person in the area should call investigators at the Troup County Sheriff's Department at 706-883-1746.
