An upcoming fitness program will let local participants travel the state -- without leaving Muscogee County.
Walk Georgia, an eight-week effort provided by The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension, allows both individuals and teams to convert activity minutes into miles. It's all done through a Web site, www.walkgeorgia.org, where you can use a computerized map to chart your progress across Georgia each week.
"Pretty much any activity you do daily, you can convert it over to miles," Rhea Bentley, expanded food and nutrition program agent for the cooperative extension, said at a Walk Georgia pep rally this morning.
As Columbus walkers participate, teams in counties across Georgia will be doing the same program, Bentley explained.
Registration for Walk Georgia opens Feb. 18 and closes March 10. The program begins March 3.
At the end of the eight weeks, teams and individuals can win prizes by logging the most miles or visiting the most counties.
