A Columbus man was charged with murder Tuesday night in the death of a one-year-old infant who died of massive head injuries he received last Thursday while his mother was in National Guard training at Ft. Jackson, S.C., Columbus Police Lt. Steve Cox said Wednesday.
Jaylon Love, of 3031 Avondale Road, died at Henrietta Eggleston Hospital in Atlanta Saturday Saturday, Cox said. An autopsy performed at the GBI crime laboratory in Atlanta found that the baby died of head injuries.
Tuesday night, police charged Ivan Cedric Johnson, 38, of the same address, with murder. He was acting as guardian while the mother was away in training. Johnson received a hearing in Columbus Recorder's Court Wednesday, where the case was ordered bound over to Muscogee County Superior Court. The case is expected to be presented to a Muscogee County grand jury.
About 6:30 p.m. Thursday, the baby was transported by ambulance to The Medical Center Emergency Center unconscious and in a comatose state, Cox said. The baby was evaluated, then transported to Eggleston for treatment.
The autopsy showed that the child died of cerebral hemorrhaging that resulted from trauma the child received while in the custody of Johnson, Cox said.
