The Russell County Commission gave unanimous support to Commissioner Peggy Martin's initiative to bring an Alabama Career Center employment office back to Phenix City Tuesday during the county commission meeting at the Russell County Courthouse.
Phenix City lost its Alabama Career Center office two years ago, with the Opelika office 30 miles away taking over the responsibility for Russell County. County residents have used the Columbus employment office.
But Martin said while the Columbus employment office has been real helpful, but the city and county needs its own office.
"Many of the people who use the employment office may not be able to afford to drive to Opelika, or Columbus for that matter," Martin said.
Never miss a local story.
The county commission unanimously agreed to send a resolution to the Alabama State Employment Service asking that Russell County be budgeted for the next fiscal year.
