Australian heartthrob Michael Johns on Thursday was eliminated from "American Idol" -- an outcome most fans are calling this season's biggest shocker yet.
Johns, who once lived in the Atlanta area, was joined in the bottom two by Carly Smithson and Syesha Mercado. In the hours prior to the show, a majority of predictions -- including one from the makers of digital video recorder TiVo -- suggested Mercado would be sent home.
Tuesday, Johns performed Aerosmith's "Dream On." Judge Simon Cowell called it "very good," but added that it also seemed a bit "wannabe-ish."
Thursday's show followed the reality TV show's philanthropy extravaganza, "Idol Gives Back," which aired Wednesday. Last year, contestants got an elimination-free week in conjunction with "Idol Gives Back."
Host Ryan Seacrest teased Johns with that possibility Thursday night, but then said he'd be going home.
