The Russell County chapter of Relay for Life will hold its annual overnight relay against cancer on May 2 and 3.
The relay, which is sponsored by the American Cancer Society, will begin at 6 p.m. at Garrett Stadium. The event features teams of participants walking relay-style around the track and taking part in fun activities off the track, in efforts to raise funds to help those affected by cancer. Teams can include coworkers, club members, family and friends who have gathered donations prior to the event.
The event will also feature a Luminaria Ceremony, which will take place after sundown. Cancer survivors will circle the track rimmed with paper lanterns while the names of survivors and those lost to the disease are read aloud. Luminarias can be purchased for a donation of $5.
Anyone interested in making a donation or joining a team may do so by contacting Tereesa Smith at 334-855-3416 or by visiting the organization's Web site, www.events.cancer.org/rflrussellal.
