The seven "American Idol" finalists took on Mariah Carey songs Tuesday, in a ballad-dominated night when the three male singers came out on top.
Leading the pack in many fans' minds was David Cook, who offered a surprising grunge rock take on Carey's pop hit, "Always Be My Baby." Cook, whose cancer-striken brother was in the audience, was uncharacteristically emotional as the judges praised him.
On the other end of the spectrum? The four women, who struggled with diva-heavy tunes ranging from "Hero" to "Without You." Ironically, many fans agree Kristy Lee Cook -- an almost universally hated contestant at the competition's early stages -- led the night's females.
One singer will be eliminated in tonight's episode, which starts at 9 p.m. on Fox.
