A Columbus Fire Department lieutenant is on administrative leave without pay after being charged with the sexual battery of a 16-year-old girl.
John Wayne Chappell, 47, was arrested April 22 on an outstanding warrant for sexual battery, police reports state. That arrest, for which he made his $2,500 bond, came after an April 14 arrest for simple battery near his East Heights Drive home.
Chappell paid a $358.75 cash bond on that charge, said Muscogee County Sheriff's Maj. Joe McCrea.
On Wednesday, Chappell was put on leave, Fire and EMS Chief Jeff Meyer said.
