When judge Simon Cowell called Tuesday's Neil Diamond night one of the strangest shows in "American Idol" history, he wasn't exaggerating.
Part of the chaos resulted from the episode's format. Each of the five contestants sang two songs, making for a rushed setup that allowed the judges to comment extensively only during the second round of performances.
And when judges gave brief feedback after the first round, it was dominated by a shining moment of incoherence courtesy of Paula Abdul. Perhaps a result of the dress rehearsal judges watched earlier that night, she mistakenly thought contestant Jason Castro had already performed two songs.
Song choices, too, did little to woo younger viewers. Rocker David Cook led the pack, chiefly due to his contemporary take on "All I Really Need Is You."
One contestant will be eliminated during tonight's episode, which starts at 9 p.m. on Fox. Reporter Sonya Sorich will blog the show "live," so be sure to check the "American Idol" blog at www.ledger-enquirer.com for updates throughout the show.
