Memo to "American Idol" contestant Jason Castro: Covering a song by an artist with a hairstyle similar to your own doesn't ensure success.
Tuesday night, the dreadlocked singer's rendition of "I Shot the Sheriff" was dubbed "utterly atrocious" by judge Simon Cowell. Despite pleasant vocals, Castro didn't fare much better on his second song, "Mr. Tambourine Man" -- thanks largely to a set of fumbled lyrics.
He seems like the clear choice to go home, but viewers could, as usual, be in for a surprise. Despite a fairly extensive variety of available tunes, Tuesday's theme -- songs that inspired rock -- didn't produce too many standouts.
Even rocker David Cook seemed to encounter some performance fatigue. The most memorable thing about his first song of the night, "Hungry Like the Wolf," was judge Paula Abdul's feedback: "I think your 'Hungry Like the Wolf' has left me with a big appetite."
Tonight's elimination episode starts at 9 p.m. on Fox.
