Don Avery, chief executive officer of Hughston Orthopedic Hospital, announced his resignation today, effective later this month.
The announcement comes less than a month after Columbus Regional Healthcare System, which operates the Medical Center and Doctors Hospital, made public its plans to purchase Hughston Hospital from Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Inc.
Avery will be leaving Columbus to take the position of president and CEO at HCA's Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin, Ga.
Avery said Columbus Regional had offered him a "very compelling opportunity" to remain in Columbus and re-join their organization. Avery served as a senior vice president at Columbus Regional before taking the position of Hughston Hospital CEO in 2003.

"In the end though, I decided that staying with HCA and accepting the job in Dublin was best for my family," Avery said in a statement.
Don will take over as Fairview Park CEO later in May, but technically will remain Hughston Hospital CEO until the end of June, which is when the sale to Columbus Regional is expected to close.
