Paul "Bear" Bryant fans can be the first to see the staged reading of a brand-new play about the legendary University of Alabama head football coach.
The Alabama Shakespeare Festival has commissioned playwright and Chief Operating Officer Michael Vigilant to write the play, "Bear Country." The staged reading will be at 4:30 p.m. EDT Friday at the theater, which is in Montgomery at 1 Festival Drive.
"Bear Country" is the kick-off event of the 2008 Southern Writers' Project Festival of New Plays. The Southern Writers' Project began in 1991 to showcase the Southern story-telling tradition.
The play highlights the wit and wisdom of Bryant, who came from poverty to become the revered football coach. It focuses on his leadership style and also lets the viewer in on some lesser-known anecdotes and stories about his life.
Never miss a local story.
Vigilant has been involved with writing and producing plays and musicals for 20 years. He has had more than a dozen works published by Samuel French, Contemporary Drama Service and Pioneer Drama Service. Some works include "Cindy Cinderella" and "The Wedding Ring." Before coming to ASF, Vigilant was playwright resident and public relations manager for Michigan's Meadow Brook Theatre.
Tickets are $10.
