A Montgomery, Ala. man accidentally shot himself in the hand while cleaning his gun, Columbus police said.
According to a police report, Jacob Murrell was at a residence on Turnberry Lane at around noon Thursday, cleaning his .243 Winchester rifle when he accidentally shot himself in his left hand.
Murrell told police that a bullet was stuck in the barrel of the gun, so he got a cleaning rod and started pushing it down the barrel.
The cleaning rod struck the bolt on the rifle, causing it to move forward and the gun to discharge.
