A Russell County man pleaded guilty Tuesday to sexually abusing a young girl last summer, netting himself a 25-year sentence.
Danny Godwin, 52, was sentenced by Russell County Circuit Court Judge George Greene for the June 2007 abuse of a 5-year-old girl after he pleaded guilty to sexual abuse of a child under the age of 12, said Chief Deputy District Attorney Buster Landreau.
"He's going to be gone for a long time, and the child did not have to go through the trauma of testifying," Landreau said.
The girl was on the Russell County man's property in the afternoon, and Landreau said Godwin had her touch him inappropriately while they were both underneath his mobile home.
About a month later, her mother noticed her daughter putting her dolls in sexual situations. She asked her about it, and the girl revealed what happened.
Godwin was arrested in late June and made bond in January, though his bond was revoked shortly afterward. Landreau said Godwin approached the victim's mother and asked her to drop the charges.
"When she said no, he said, 'You know, accidents do happen,' " the prosecutor said.
Attorney Jeremy Armstrong, who represents Godwin, couldn't be reached for comment.
