Gasoline jumped to a record high today in Columbus on the eve of a typically heavily traveled Memorial Day holiday weekend.
The average price of regular unleaded hit $3.833 locally, up a penny from Wednesday, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report and the Oil Price Information Service.
Columbus gas prices are 36 cents per gallon higher than they were a month ago. They are 77 cents per gallon higher than on May 22 a year ago.
Atlanta has the highest average price today in Georgia at $3.84 per gallon, also an all-time high for that city. Atlanta, Athens and Columbus each have been jockeying for the state's highest fuel price over the last few weeks.
The state's lowest average can be found in Augusta at $3.72 per gallon.
Diesel fuel prices also spiked higher today in Columbus to an all-time high of $4.60 per gallon, up four cents from the day before.
Nationally, more records fell. The U.S. average for regular unleaded gas was $3.83 per gallon, AAA reported, while diesel reached $4.59 per gallon.
