Shortly after noon CST today a tanker truck carrying 8,000 gallons of gasoline swerved to miss a small car and overturned near the intersection of U.S. 280 and Lee Road 379 in east Alabama, killing the trucker, state troopers and the Lee County coroner said.
The truck, driven by a Lee County man, was traveling west on U.S. 280 when a small car pulled out of Lee 379, causing the truck driver to swerve and lose control of his rig, which overturned.
The driver of the small car, for which there is not yet a description available, drove away from the scene. The truck driver was taken to The Medical Center, where he died in the emergency room, said Lee County Corroner Bill Harris.
State troopers closed 280-431 and have redirected traffic onto Lee Road 430. They said they expect the cleanup to carry on into the evening, so rush hour traffic in that area may be much worse than usual.
More details and photographs will be posted as they become available.
