A dead body was found in the woods near Waverly, Ala., Wednesday morning, Chambers County Sheriff's officers said.
Investigator Tony Ward said a hunter discovered the body due to the odor and called the sheriff's office at around 8:45 a.m. CST.
Deputies from the sheriff's office, the Alabama Bureau of Investigation, the 5th Judicial Circuit Office, the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences and the Camp Hill Police Department responded to the area.
Investigators have not determined the person's identity or if the person was a man or woman; the body was decomposing, Ward said.
"It had been out there about a week," he said.
The body was turned over to the department of forensics to determine the person's identity and cause of death.
The case remains under investigation by the ABI and the sheriff's office.
