Courtney Larrell Lockhart pleaded not guilty today to all charges, including capital murder, in the shooting death of an 18-year-old Auburn University student in March.
Lockhart, 23, of Smths, Ala. appeared in Lee County Circuit Court today for his arraignment where the three count capital murder indictment—one for each allegation of the robbery, kidnapping and attempted rape of Lauren Burk, 18—was formally read. He was also charged in connection with a convenience store rbbery.
Lockhart was also apprised of his right to council. Attorneys, including Phenix City defence attorney Joel Collins, have already been assigned to his case.
Court records state the Smiths man told police he robbed Burk on March 4, drove her around in her car and forced her to remove her clothes before fatally shooting her. Burk, of Marietta, Ga. was found lying in the roadway on Alabama 147. She died of a gunshot wound at the East Alabama Medical Center.
