Longtime Muscogee County Superior Court Judge Kenneth Followill, 72, plans to retire at the end of the year.
Followill sent a memo to the other judges in the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit on Friday calling a meeting for next week. One the agenda items was his pending retirement and decision to seek senior judge status.
"As a matter of some interest, I expect to announce today my intention to assume senior judge status," Followill wrote. "I do not plan to qualify for re-election, but will finish out my term, God willing."
The judge's term expires Dec. 31. Followill has been on the bench for nearly four decades — seven years as a State Court judge and 30 years on the Superior Court. He has been a judge in Muscogee County since 1970 — a year before the city and county consolidated.
Followill's seat will be up for grabs in the November election. Qualifying will be later this month.
