A Columbus man has been charged in Friday's shooting death of a pregnant woman.
Jovan Elshawn Thompson, 22, of 1421 23rd St., is accused of shooting his girlfriend and mother of his baby, Sara Honica Thrasher, in the head about 4:45 a.m. during an argument the couple was having at the 23rd Street home Thompson shares with his mother, said Columbus Police Lt. Steve Cox. Thrasher, of 1449 Bowie Ave., was 7 months pregnant.
Thompson drove Thrasher to The Medical Center where an emergency operation occurred to take the baby, police said. The baby was in good condition.
Thrasher was being treated in the hospital's intensive care unit where she died around 4:30 p.m.
Thompson was taken into custody about 5:45 this morning at his residence and initially charged with aggravated assault, family violence and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. The assault charged was changed to murder shortly after 5 p.m.
He is being held at the Muscogee County Jail for an 8 a.m. Saturday hearing in Recorder's Court.
