An Opelika man found in the street Sunday morning with a gunshot wound died later that day on the operating table.
Opelika police responded to a call about a shooting at 1411 S. Long St. around 1:30 a.m. CDT, said Gene Manning, Lee County chief deputy coroner. When they arrived, they found Demecio Griffin, 25, lying in the street. He had been shot in the torso, Manning said.
Griffin was conscious and alert when police arrived. He was treated and transported to the East Alabama Medical Center by its EMS, the chief deputy said.
Griffin died during surgery at the hospital, and his body was sent for an autopsy to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery. A cause of death hasn't been determined.
The incident is being investigated by the Opelika Police Department, the Alabama Department of Forensics and the Lee County District Attorney and Coroner's offices, Manning said.
