Phenix City Mayor Jeff Hardin will give notice of the election Tuesday, officially opening qualification for the Aug. 26 municipal election. While qualifications will just now be opening, candidates for the four council posts and mayor have been well known for quite some time.
Hardin is not running for a second term as mayor, citing family and business reasons. District 1 Councilman John Storey has also decided not to run for another term in office after eight years on the council. The three other councilmembers — At Large Councilman Ray Bush, District 2 Councilwoman Gail Brantley and District 3 Councilman Arthur Sumbry are all running for election with opposition.
Apparent candidates for the municipal election include former three-time mayor Sonny Coulter for mayor; former planning commission member Jimmy Wetzel and former At-large Councilman J.W. Brannen for the councilman at-large position; former municipal court clerk Max Wilkes for District 1; Phenix City Beautiful chair Georgia Laningham for District 2; and Bobby Stallings for District 3.
