Gas prices pushed to within a penny of $4 per gallon today in Columbus, continuing a string of record highs.
The average price of regular gas hit $3.991 locally, up from $3.979 Sunday, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report and the Oil Price Information Service.
Columbus gas prices are 20 cents per gallon higher than they were a month ago. They are nearly $1.05 per gallon higher than on June 16 a year ago.
Athens and Atlanta have the highest average price today in Georgia at $4.03 per gallon.

The state's lowest average can be found in Valdosta at $3.94 per gallon.
Diesel fuel prices retreated slightly today in Columbus to $4.74 per gallon.
The U.S. average for regular gas, meanwhile, hit a record $4.08 per gallon, AAA reported, while diesel reached an all-time high of $4.80 per gallon.
