Mark Lajoye, a former Columbus police officer, has announced that he is running for Muscogee County Sheriff.
Lajoye will run as a write-in candidate in the November election against John Darr, a 20-year veteran of the sheriff's office, and the current sheriff Ralph Johnson.
If elected, Lajoye said he would ensure fair treatment of those going through the justice system. He is also concerned about overcrowding in the county jail and fair promotion of sheriff's department employees.
Lajoye spent 12 years in the Army and 17 years in the Alabama Army National Guard. He also worked for the Columbus Police Department for 12 years.
Lajoye, 48, has been a Columbus resident since 1988. He and his wife, Martha, have one son.
