One of the men involved in a Sunday wreck that took the life of an Opelika police officer is in jail charged with manslaughter.
Jimmy Vickerstaff Jr., 31, of Auburn was booked into the Lee County Jail at 8:10 p.m. Sunday CDT, said Lee County Sheriff's Capt. Van Jackson.
Authorities allege Vickerstaff was one of two men in a Ford Explorer that crossed the center line around 2:50 p.m. and struck John Belk III's Jeep as he was driving east on Lee Road 10 in Auburn. Belk, a corporal with the Opelika Police Department, died from blunt force injuries, Lee County Coroner Bill Harris said.
"John was a hard-working man," said Capt. Alan Elkins. "He never really did anything to bring attention to himself. He didn't look for accolades."
