While some residents challenge whether the Russell County town should even continue to exist, Hurtsboro is headed for an Oct. 7 runoff in its mayoral election.
Rayford Tapley did not get enough votes to take the election from Teutonya Burns, who came only five votes short of matching his tally. Tapley got 62 votes and Burns got 57. A third candidate, Greg Smith, got 28 votes, according to Town Clerk Jim Baxley.
Five Hurtsboro residents have petitioned to have the town charter forfeited. A judge is expected to rule on that this week.
