The Columbus Red Cross shelter at Calvary Christian Baptist Church was home to 80 evacuees late Monday afternoon.
All of the people in the shelter, being operated by the West Central Georgia Red Cross chapter, were from the New Orleans area. They were part of the mandatory evacuation of nearly 2 million people because of Hurricane Gustav.
The Columbus shelter, which opened Sunday night, can house as many as 400 people, said spokesperson Mitzi Oxford.
The Russell County Red Cross shelter at Chattahoochee Valley Community College reported Monday afternoon that 25 people were staying there. Like the shelter in Columbus, all of the people were from the New Orleans area.
