Jody Barrier Smith, a special education teacher at Eagle Ridge Academy, received a $1,000 New Teacher Assistance Grant from Georgia Power earlier this month.
Smith was one of 35 new teachers recognized by the power company during an awards luncheon on Sept. 13.
Teacher nominations were submitted by colleges of education across the state. To be eligible for the grant, candidates had to be in the top 25 percent of their class, be a first-year teacher employed by a public school in Georgia and demonstrate a high aptitude for teaching.
Smith, a graduate of Columbus State University, can use the money to purchase materials for her classroom.
Never miss a local story.
Georgia Power began the program in 2004 as a way to encourage teachers to stay in education and to provide them with funds to purchase supplies for the classroom.
