More than 10,000 American service members have been listed as missing in action since World War I.
To honor those heroes and the thousands of soldiers who have been incarcerated as prisoners of war, Fort Benning will hold a ceremony commemorating National POW/MIA Recognition Day. The brief event will take place Friday at 3 p.m. outside the old National Infantry Museum.
National POW/MIA Recognition Day was first recognized on July 18, 1979, and has been recognized by presidential proclamation on the third Friday of September since 1986.
The public is invited to attend the ceremony.
