The ticket deadline is Saturday for a banquet and celebration for the inauguration Tuesday at the Columbus Convention & Trade Center, 801 Front Ave.
Three “behind the scenes” Columbus residents will speak at the event, which will also include televised highlights from Washington, D.C.
“These are everyday people who will pay tribute to the new president,” said Minister Pat Parkman, whose Working Excellence Ministries is sponsoring the program. Tickets are $25.
The speakers are: Steve Chittum, director of Frontline Ministries; Mario Davis, an assistant vice-president at CB&T; and Danielle Washington, a senior at Columbus High School. Music and convention highlights are also on the program.
Parkman said Republicans, as well as Democrats and Independents, will be welcome.
“It’s open for everybody. This is the American president,” she said. “We need to come together to make things better for the next four years and beyond.”
The lunch is one of several church-related celebrations to mark the historic election of the country’s first African-American President.

A few blocks away, Fourth Street Baptist Church will mark the occasion beginning with a brief devotion at 9:30 a.m. in its sanctuary. The Rev. Johnny Flakes III, co-pastor, will lead the brief service. Following the prayer, the inauguration and surrounding activities will be televised until noon. Then the church will have a luncheon followed by a prayer for Obama.
Everything is free, and no reservations are needed. The program should end at 1 p.m. Call 706-324-2055 for more information.
A third event — this one in Phenix City — is a pre-inauguration banquet from 6-9 p.m. that will be hosted by Phillips Temple CME Church on Sunday night. The speaker will be Robert Turner, from UNICEF.
“After the election, we decided to have a pre-inaugural ball,” said Muriel Battle, one of the main organizers of the Phillips Temple banquet. The dress is semi-formal. No reservations are needed for the program or meal. Call 334-298-3036 for more information.
