LAFAYETTE, Ala. - Alabama State Fire Marshal Ed Paulk says two rural churches in Chambers County have been destroyed by suspicious fires.
Paulk said Saturday an investigation was under way for the fires at Union CME Church and Liberty CME Church.
He said he can’t definitely say the fires are arson, but the proximity of the fires leads him to call them “highly suspicious.”
Alabama went through a series of fires in Bibb County and west Alabama that destroyed nine rural churches three years ago.
Never miss a local story.
Matthew Cloyd, an Alabama-Birmingham student, and Benjamin Moseley, who was attending Birmingham-Southern College, admitted setting fire to the nine churches. Another BSC student, Russell DeBusk, pleaded guilty to taking part in burning the five Bibb churches.
