The Kendrick Lady Cherokees opened the defense of their 2008 GHSA AAA basketball championship with a victory Friday night, turning up the heat in the fourth quarter to turn back Worth County 46-38 at home.
The Lady Cherokees' Jazmin Thomas scored five of her team-high 13 points in the fourth quarter as Kendrick wore down the undermanned Lady Rams, who dressed just seven players.
But the Lady Cherokees played unevenly, displaying flashes of the suffocating pressure defense Kendrick has used with great success in recent years but committing several floor mistakes.
Missed opportunities, poor shooting and the failure to take charge of the game into the fourth quarter did not make coach Sterling Hicks pleased. "it was ugly. Real ugly," he said.
Never miss a local story.
But it was good enough to improve the Lady Cherokees to 21-7, with a date against the Jackson, Atlanta/Washington County winner.
